Franchise Spotlight: Mail and Courier

Ecommerce boom is good news for the sector and there are revenue streams beyond parcel delivery.

Australia’s $6.1bn courier sector is flourishing, with the industry growth rate projected to rise to 5.8% in 2021, according to market research firm IBISWorld.  The rapid growth in ecommerce delivery volumes – an industry trend supercharged by the Covid-19 pandemic – has been the primary growth driver.

And with demand unlikely to diminish any time soon, the future of the mail and courier industry looks bright.

Franchise market analysis

Requiring significant investment and infrastructure to compete, the barriers to entry are dauntingly high in this market.  Buy a franchise, however, and you can operate under the umbrella of a well-established, trusted brand with a proven business model and a range of support and back-end systems to help you thrive.

Mail and courier franchises also offer the prospect of significant repeat business, and in some cases, revenue streams beyond courier and shipping services.

Also, good news for franchisees is the family-friendly office hours and the fact prior experience in related sectors is seldom required. Franchisees in one network include a former chef, ex-electrician and one-time banker.

Mail Boxes Etc (MBE) franchisees provide business services including design, print and copy services, private mailboxes and mail forwarding, virtual offices, and packing and shipping. The brand has 2,500 global locations and 38 centres across Australia, with the top 10 performers averaging 31% annual growth, according to the franchisor’s statistics.

Aramex Australia (formerly Fastway Couriers) has benefited hugely from the ecommerce boom. Three investment tiers are available: the super cheap ‘Courier Lite’ option with a three-year term; a five-year ‘Courier’ term with exclusive territory; while ‘Regional’ franchisees operate a regional depot facility supporting courier franchisees.

More than 100 MailPlus franchisees, meanwhile, provide logistics and shipping solutions to more than 7,000 Australian businesses, including PO BOX clearance, DX mail delivery, and ‘office errands’ like restocking office supplies, inter-office deliveries, and urgent pick-ups and deliveries.
